Alexander Valentine is an artist, publisher, designer, and educator. He is a co-founder of No Coast Editions, a publisher of artist's editions and books. Valentine has presented his work nationally in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis, and internationally in Den Haag, Tokyo, and London. He teaches in both the Printmedia and Visual Communications Departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In May 2016, he presented a solo exhibition at Johalla Projects, Chicago.

As part of The James Public Art program, the installation at The James Chicaog, entitled “Pace & Space” features two original artworks by Valentine displayed in oversized exterior frames on the east-facing sidewalk by The Patio on Rush Street. The collage works are comprised of vibrantly colored patterns, reflective of the incoming warm season, that weave and intertwine with geometric shapes, conveying upward movement.

Artist notes on his piece at The James Chicago:

“My inspiration for the two collages draws from the interior spaces of the hotel, as well as the perceptual noise and language of interactive and immersive media, such as outdoor signage, typography, advertising and internet culture. I express my interests through distorted, more blatantly graphic forms of public address and the ways those forms vie for our attention."
