Coffee Shop (G)Round Up
For some of us, coffee is the fuel that gets us through the day. For others, it’s something to savor when we curl up with a good book. Either way, there’s nothing like a cozy coffee shop for getting a cup—or several—of Joe. But instead of reaching for the same old grande or venti, check out an independent seller or local chain. Whether you’re visiting us in Chicago or New York, it’s worth exploring some of our favorite coffee shops. Most are within a 15-minute walk of The James, but we’ve also included a couple others if you want to venture a bit farther afield.
Dollop Coffee and Tea
345 East Ohio Street
This decade-old local chain serves up Metropolitan coffee and home-baked pastries at seven locations in the Chicagoland area designed by architect Paul Leisen.
222 West Merchandise Mart Plaza
This gourmet market located inside the Merchandise Mart is known for their wide selection of hard to find wines and beer but also includes a popular morning coffee program.
714 North Wells Street
A European-style bistro and bakery serves up coffee and lattes with house-made syrups plus pastries, bagels & sandwiches.
Dark Matter Coffee
738 N Western Avenue
This offbeat coffee bar and roasting facility offers artisanal, barrel-aged brews in a funky, mural-covered space.
In New York
The Smile Newsstand
177 Franklin Street
Located in a landmark 1830s Federal-style townhouse, this favorite of The James pours a great cup of coffee—and we’re sweet on its dark chocolate chip cookie, too.
75 Vandam Street
Visit the Tribeca location of this craft roaster, which pours direct trade coffee in hand-painted Italian ceramic mugs. Prefer to stay in? The James serves complimentary La Colombe to our guests every morning.
248 Mercer Street
Sample socially and environmentally friendly espresso, coffee, and other beverages at this globally conscious Mercer Street coffee shop.
160 Berry Street
Sip ground-to-order brews at this Wiliamsburg café, where all the beans are on full display to customers. Stop by Thursdays at noon for a free cup.
Check out all of the great coffee shops on tap in New York or Chicago when you book at room at The James.
