When the warmer weather hits, the winter coat is peeled off and it’s time to head outdoors. Read on for our top outdoor event picks in Chicago, New York and West Hollywood to help shake off the winter hibernation.
One of the most unusual but quintessential spring events in Chicago is Chiditarod (Wilcott & Hubbard). Here, teams of five in themed costumes take to the streets for a giant shopping cart race, going from bar to bar to donate food. The first team to get to the finish line after dropping off all their food wins and all proceeds benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository. It is definitely a sight not to be missed.
It wouldn’t be March without celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2017 and New York offers one of the largest events nationwide. The NYC parade begins on 44th street, marching up Fifth Avenue and naturally, it ends at the American Irish Historical Society on 80th street. After taking in the festivities, head to one of New York’s many Irish pubs to toast the holiday.
The traditional Indian custom of Holi comes to life at the annual Festival of Colors at Whittier Narrows Park (750 S. Santa Anita, South El Monte). This event celebrates the custom of throwing colorful powder in the air (and at each other) to welcome spring. Be sure to bring extra cash to buy bottles with paint to spray and other swag.
