1970’s Film Screenings at JIMMY Chicago
If you combined the cool, offbeat film choices of the best independent movie theater and the plush seating and handcrafted cocktails of your favorite laid-back lounge, you’d have this summer’s 1970’s film screenings at JIMMY Chicago. Each Wednesday night until August 26th, a different film will be featured, along with complimentary popcorn.
JIMMY, the cocktail lounge at Chicago boutique hotel The James, has been recognized as more than just your typical bar on Rush Street. So far in 2015 it has been included in Michigan Avenue’s “Top 10 Hotel Bars in Chicago” and in Thrillist’s “15 Best Bars for Date Nights.”
These aren’t your straight-up 70’s blockbusters like Jaws or Star Wars, but a carefully curated collection chosen by an expert. Josh Chicoine, co-founder of Chicago’s International Movie & Music Festival (CIMMfest) has selected a truly unique mix of films either made in the 70’s or set during the dynamic era. CIMMfest celebrates movies in which music plays a powerful, integral role and the movies Chicoine has picked here – though wildly different in terms of music and film genre - all fit that theme.
From remarkable original scores to soundtracks packed with popular hits, each of these movies is a master class in cinema driven by music. Jerry Goldsmith, the composer who scored science fiction picture Logan’s Run, is an 18-time Academy Award nominee who scored dozens of critically acclaimed films including Planet of the Apes, Chinatown, Alien, Hoosiers, L.A. Confidential and Mulan. Packed with stars who would soon be household names (Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Ben Affleck), the Dazed and Confused soundtrack features songs from some of the 70’s biggest rock, hard rock and heavy metal acts including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss, Black Sabbath and ZZ Top.
