If you love music and the raw, authentic energy of young talent with the potential to make it, New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon is for you, no matter your age. For five days each fall, the CMJ Music Marathon takes over more than 70 NYC clubs and music venues to showcase hundreds of emerging artists. Of course the experience would be even sweeter if a music expert could guide you to the venues and bands that are a match for your personal tastes. We’ve asked Jared Dietch, world-class DJ, music curator and producer, to do just that.

We assembled brief music “profiles” of six adults ages 22-50, and asked Jared to recommend a CMJ performance for each of them. Find the profiles that most closely match your own tastes and then get yourself to some performances.

A CMJ Show Pass ($149) allows access to showcases and venues for all five nights.

(Tickets for some performances may also be sold separately by the venue. Check with each venue for availability.)

Book a stay at The James New York during CMJ Marathon week. Stay three nights and the fourth is on us, with our Bonus Nights @ The James program.

Jared’s CMJ pick for Jessica:

Kamasi Washington at BRIC House, Thursday, October 15, 10:45PM
(also performing at Le Poisson Rouge, Friday, October 16, 8:30-9:15 PM)

Jared’s take:  Jazz makes a comeback here. Kamasi Washington not only had a #1 Jazz album this year, but also had hits with Thundercat, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. Not to be missed at BRIC House, one of the most exciting art spaces in Brooklyn.

Ed, mid 40’s

Favorite Artists: Bruno Mars, Chris Brown; Best Concert Ever: Commodores

Favorite Venue: The Palladium in Worcester, MA

Jared’s CMJ pick for Ed:

BØRNS, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Saturday, October 17, 10:30-11:15 PM
Jared’s take:  Fast rising BØRNS has been on quite a ride. 2 EP’s and a single album position him as one of the truly buzz-worthy artists of the moment.
Meghan, 22

Favorite Artists: Dave Matthews, Nirvana; Best Concert Ever: Dave Matthews

Favorite Venue: House of Blues

Jared’s CMJ pick for Meghan:
The Men at Baby's All Right, Friday, October 16, 8:00 PM

Jared’s take:  Brooklyn band plays Brooklyn venue, and it feels good to be home. The same team who designed The Box, one of New York’s most incredible venues of the last 20 years, is behind Baby’s All Right.

Alex, 25

Favorite Artists: Brittany Spears, Lana Del Rey; Best Concert Ever: Brittany Spears

Favorite Venue: Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas

Jared’s CMJ pick for Alex:

Empress Of at Terminal 5, Thursday, October 15, 8:00 PM

Jared’s take:  Signed to XL and has spent time touring with Florence and the Machine, Jungle and Kimbra, Empress Of is an artist not to be missed. One of New York’s best live music venues, Terminal 5, is the perfect place to see this band. It should be an incredible night.

Mike T, late 40's

Favorite Artists: U2, Frank Sinatra; Best Concert Ever: Tom Jones

Favorite Venue: Tweeter Center (when it was the Tweeter Center)

Jared’s CMJ pick for Mike:

Balthazar at Pianos, Wednesday, October 14, 8:00-8:30 PM

(also performing at Rockwood Stage 2, Friday, October 16, 5:00-5:45 PM)
Jared’s take:  From Belgium, Balthazar has been around for a while and seems to be picking up steam. The show at Pianos, an east village staple, is a great way to see a band that has clearly spent time honing their craft.

Dave, 39

Favorite Artists: Jack Johnson, Kenny Chesney; Best Concert Ever: Tom Petty

Favorite Venue: Mesa Amphitheater, Mesa, AZ

Jared’s CMJ pick for Dave:

Tobias Jesso Jr. at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Wednesday, October 14, 10:00-10:45 PM

(also performing at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday, October 15, 10:00-10:45PM)

Jared’s take:  This could be a breakout moment for this Canadian newcomer. With help on his album from Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, Tobias has fans in Adele and Alana Haim, whose sister Danielle played drums on his debut album.
