The Buckingham Fountain will soon receive its first complete restoration project since it was created over 80 years ago. In support of this major undertaking, The James has partnered with the Parkways Foundation, Chicago Park District and City of Chicago in commemorate this important milestone while providing an exclusive glimpse at the history and function of The Buckingham Fountain.

A unique guided tour will take you through the hidden underground mechanics that make the majestic fountain operate while uncovering the rich history that makes the fountain so great. The Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain, is one of the nation’s most iconic and significant monuments and one of the largest fountains in the world. Opened on May 26, 1927 and funded by philanthropist Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother, Buckingham Fountain is one of the nation's finest fountains and a public icon of Chicago. The fountain is distinguished not only for its exquisite decorative details and finely wrought bronze sculpture, but also for its innovative use of technology which creates a dynamic light and water display on a massive scale. Part of the creation and execution of the 1909 Plan of Chicago, it is the work of architect-planner Edward H. Bennett. His other works include the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Wacker Drive, and city plans for Detroit, Portland, Ore., Brooklyn, and Ottawa.
