Alternative Music Venues in New York City and Chicago

A well dressed man strums an acoustic guitar.

Both New York City and Chicago are known for their vibrant music scenes. #musicattheJamesis such a part of the guest experience in both our cities that DJ Jared Dietch has been brought on board as our music curator to offer tips that go above and beyond, creating city-specific Spotify playlists that let guests get into the musical vibe of each location. #musicattheJames is made interactive via social media; guests can post their favorite songs on Facebook, and Dietch will curate custom playlists for them.

If live music is what you are looking for, below are suggestions for a few of our favorite under-the-radar local venues to check out for new acts and music styles.

New York City

Rockwood Music Hall
A tiny space with a big commitment to music, Rockwood Music Hall offers several different stages that host artists who are on the rise as well as some bigger names from time to time.

Arlene’s Grocery
Taking the space of a former grocery store and butcher shop – with the façade to match, Arlene’s Grocery is a long-standing Lower East Side venue known for nurturing emerging musical talent and features original acts, rock tribute bands, and live-band karaoke for those who want to make their own music.

The Hideout
The space is over a hundred years old and has been legally operating since 1934. The modern day Hideout is known for its mix of musical acts, including punk rock, jazz, cover bands, and a fan favorite, their in-house bluegrass band.

Blues and jazz have long been Chicago staples, and Constellation aims to promote progressive performance with a focus on jazz, improv, and contemporary classical, adding a modern touch to the tried and true music styles.
