Inside Studio Piet Boon
Discover designers we love in interiors, fashion and more. Up first: the world-renowned Piet Boon.
Take one look at our Penthouse Loft at The James New York and you’ll see why it’s easy to get lost in the world of Dutch designer, Piet Boon. Since 1983, Studio Piet Boon has been creating bespoke architecture, interiors and products in 46 countries. Below, dive into our design dossier and uncover all there is to know about this inspirational design studio.
HISTORY: Born in 1958, Boon started as a contractor but quickly became frustrated by functional designs he saw that weren’t beautiful or beautiful designs that weren’t functional. He thought he could do better and thus, created his eponymous studio in Amsterdam. In 1986, Karin Meyn joined the company as partner and creative director. Ever since, they have been creating private, corporate and commercial designs, as well as product collaborations (they’ve even designed Land Rovers) with like-minded brands across the globe.
VISION: The company’s design recipe is refined sophistication and the ingredients that comprise that recipe are functionality, aesthetics and individuality. As a total design concept firm, they believe details are as important as the design itself and are guided by an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
WORK: Of course we love our Penthouse Loft, but getting lost in Boon’s other work is quite easy. Take, for instance, The Jane in Antwerp for which Boon won best restaurant design at the 2015 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. The Gothic-meets-modern space in the chapel of a former military hospital lends itself to the culinary vision of a “fine dining meets rock and roll” experience.
More recently, Boon has been bringing is signature timeless aesthetic to city living with two NYC condo projects – the Huys (which means house in Dutch) in the NoMad neighborhood and the ‘where East meets West’ Oosten community design in Williamsburg.
FAVORITE PRODUCTS: We’re big fans of the powder coated steel and butter-soft leather Kekke Chaise Lounge and the sink-in luxury of the HEIT Swivel Chair, both of which we have in our Penthouse. You can also delve into the world of Studio Piet Boon on a smaller scale through their series of inspiration books, documenting everything from high-end private residences and kitchens to styling.
WHY PIET BOON: So much of Piet Boon’s philosophies align with The James’ ethos of warmly modern, timeless – yet highly functional- design. We’re big fans of Dutch design in general, which is very down-to-earth but has a passion for quality. Moreover, we love Boon’s idea of promoting well-being through design – the idea that your physical environment can elevate your everyday happiness and state of mind.
