Five Things To Know About The Armory Show

Early fall in New York marks the return of The Armory Show. One of the city’s biggest international art fairs, over 200 galleries from 30 countries will exhibit contemporary and modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The 2022 Armory Show runs from September 9th to 11th at Javits Center, 429 Eleventh Avenue. Below, check out five fascinating facts about this annual artistic tradition.

Deep Roots

Its origins began in 1913. The Association of American Painters and Sculpture held the very first large exhibition of modern art in America, beginning in New York City’s 69th Regiment Armory before moving to Chicago and Boston. This was the first time many Americans had ever seen contemporary art, and many were quite shocked at the content!

A Modern Revival

The current Armory Show was created in 1994. A group of New York art dealers (Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks, and Paul Morris) rented rooms at the Gramercy Park Hotel and invited dealers from New York and abroad to view works exclusively by living artists. Once the fair outgrew the hotel, it paid homage to the original Armory Show by taking its name and moving to a bigger space.

Five Unique Sectors

The different exhibitors are broken into five sections including: Galleries, 20th and 21st century artworks; Insights, solo-artist, dual-artist and thematic presentations of 20th century artworks; Presents, galleries no more than ten years old; Focus, galleries featuring new or rarely seen work by important contemporary artists; and Platform, large-scale artwork and installations.

Armory Live

For those who can’t travel to New York for the fair, they are able to experience all the offerings via the Armory Live platform. The fair will be screening programming including talks, exhibitions and presentations via the Armory Live website.

One Hot Ticket

Single-entry tickets are available at a cost of $55, with reduced early bird tickets available through to the end of July 2022. Discounted pricing available for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at www.thearmoryshow.com.
