After being scaled down in the last couple of years amid the pandemic, the celebrated New York City Marathon will return in full force this November. Participants will run 26.2-miles through the five New York boroughs — a route as grueling as it is famous. Established in 1970 with a course that ran the entirety of Central Park, this test of endurance is a lifelong dream for many runners. Making that dream a reality, however, comes with its own challenges. If you are running in the 2022 New York City Marathon and want to know some secrets for conquering this legendary course, The James NoMad is here to help you get to the finish line.
Your success depends on you, and only you. So you’ll want to prepare your body and mind as much as possible. If you’re lucky enough to be a runner in this year’s Marathon, you already know that getting to this point takes immense effort and training—not just on the day of the race, but on every day that leads up to it, too. Prepare yourself by identifying your weaknesses and facing them head-on. Focus on the things you need to improve, and actively work on them to ensure success. Set realistic goals for yourself. Do you need to break world records or come in first place? No. But you do need to set attainable goals, with a finish time goal in mind so that you can work toward achieving it.
Of course, you’ll also want to plan your lodging ahead of time, perhaps by booking a hotel stay well in advance. Because so many people travel to New York for this event, many hotels book up quickly. The James NoMad is the ideal city oasis to relax before and after the marathon, having Scarpetta at the ready for a pre-race carbo load.
Staying motivated throughout your journey to the marathon can be the biggest challenge of training. Consider joining a running club or making new friends that are also running the race in November. Together, you can hype each other up and offer encouragement when the going gets tough. It’s also important to remember different types of exercise that can help you with your conditioning and endurance. Build up your core with yoga, your stamina with weights, and your endurance with swimming. Switching up your training will help keep it fun, and your body will thank you!
The James NoMad has a fully equipped gym for you to train on the days leading up to the race. We’re also in partnership with SLT Tread and Exhale MedSpa, which can help you train and restore your body to tip-top shape so you can run the best race of your life. First, tone your body and get your cardio in with an SLT Tread session. Then, rejuvenate and recover with whole-body cryotherapy or pressotherapy session! And don’t forget Standard Dose, just blocks from The James NoMad, where you can take advantage of prime mediation space, complimentary with your stay at the hotel. Enjoy a peaceful meditation before the race to clear your mind, or afterwards to calm down from the adrenaline rush.
A defining characteristic of the Marathon is that it takes runners through all five New York boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx. Each comprising its own different terrain and challenges. The marathon starts runners off with amazing views from Staten Island’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, then through the flatlands of Brooklyn. After that, things get tough on the hill climb that is the Queensboro Bridge, but a descent into the streets of Manhattan awaits before hitting the (so-called) 20th-mile wall in the Bronx. The good news is, if you’ve made it this far, it’s only a short jaunt to the finish in Central Park!
The James NoMad is centrally located in the Flatiron district, meaning it’s easy to make your way to every borough by cab or aboard the subway. Stretch your legs a few days before the race, and walk 30 minutes from The James to Central Park to check out the finish line!
Completing any long-distance run isn’t just a physical challenge. It’s a full-body trial, and it puts your mental strength to the test. Many runners swear by yoga and meditation to get them in the runner’s mindset. Some runners also develop mantras to help them get through their races.
Fortunately, when you stay with us at The James NoMad, you’ll find serenity within the concrete jungle. You’ll also have access to Standard Dose’s state-of-the-art mediation facilities so you can enjoy a complimentary sound bath to clear your mind or participate in one of their yoga sessions to recenter yourself and your mind.
