Cherry Blossoms at Roosevelt Island

The talk of the town during the spring season is the cherry blossoms that bloom all over the city. There’s no shortage of great spots to find cherry blossoms in the city, from Central Park to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and Roosevelt Island. There are two varieties of cherry blossom trees in New York City, Yoshino, and Kwanzan. Although they bloom at different times, you’ll have a window of about a month to catch them during peak bloom. The best time to see these blossoms in their full splendor is to plan for early April or early May. Roosevelt Island features some of the best free views of New York City and is also home to both early-blooming Yoshino varietals and late-blooming Kwanzan trees. Visiting Roosevelt Island is easy when you stay at The James NoMad. It takes approximately 30 minutes to get to the island by subway from The James, and only a couple more minutes if you decide to take the Roosevelt Island tram. The trip is a nice break from the bustle of the city, and you’ll be able to have a moment of calm and quiet while admiring the iconic NYC skyline under the cherry trees.

The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden

2023 marks the 20th annual Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens. The organization has partnered with artist Lily Kwon to design this year’s exhibition. You’ll be able to appreciate over 1000 orchids while they are in full bloom, bringing exotic colors to the big apple. The show opens to the public in February and runs until April. Secure your tickets online so you can enjoy and fully immerse yourself in one of the best events in the city during the spring. On select nights during The Orchid Show, adults 21 and over can experience the exhibition through Orchid Nights, which features music, cash bars, and available food options.

New Museum Exhibits

New York City museums prepare for the summer with new exhibitions throughout the spring. For example, Fotografiska, located a 10-minute walk from The James NoMad, will host a new photography exhibition focused on the Hip-Hop evolution in New York City. Hip-hop was born at a Bronx basement party in August of 1973. Fifty years later, this installation will trace the genre’s evolution from its roots to the present day through 200 powerful photos by 57 photographers, ‘Hip-Hop: Conscious, Unconscious’ will be open through May 21, 2023, in celebration of hip-hop’s 50th birthday as a genre.

The New York Historical Society Museum & Library will be debuting its ‘I’ll Have What She’s Having: The Jewish Deli’ show, a showcase all about Jewish deli culture that makes up a big part of New York City’s food scene. Pastrami sandwiches, bagels, pickles, and knishes all get their due in this unique installation. You’ll be able to appreciate the vital role of the Jewish deli through the immigrant experience during WWII through its present-day iterations. Check out this exhibit before heading to Katz’s Deli for a complete NYC deli experience.

Frieze New York returns to The Shed in Hudson Yards for an art-filled weekend. Frieze will be taking over with dozens of galleries showcasing the work of up-and-coming artists as well as known favorites at this international art fair not to be missed. Take a walk on the High Line and end up at Hudson Yards from May 17th to the 21st for a must-see art experience.
